Mr. Oliver is ready for his forever home! Ollie is 4 years old and has so much playful energy to share. His favorite things are playing fetch and toys that have treats hidden inside. He is OBSESSED! His least favorite thing is dog clothes - why would anyone want to hide that beautiful long hair anyway?
Oliver has overcome challenges in his past, including abuse and multiple homes. Because of that, he is very nervous around new people and he is protective of his people and his things. His last home made the difficult decision to rehome him because he became too protective of the new baby in the house, and was being aggressive toward visitors. Weare not aware of nor have we witnessed any biting behavior, but it will be important to keep a close eye on him. He will do best in a calm home that doesn’t have a lot of visitors. He needs to be kept under control and introduced to visitors slowly. He seems to prefer women over men, most likely due to his history of abuse, and while we think that he would do just fine with an adult male in the house, it will be important to do a meet and greet first. Oliver also has a history of not being good with children, they are very scary for him. His forever home should NOT have children, and he should be kept under control and watched closely around young visitors.
Another of Ollie’s favorite things is barking. Think of him as your new security system - if there’s a noise, person, dog, or delivery outside, he will let you know! It is not something we expect will be able to be trained out of him, so his new home will need to embrace his vocal tendencies.
Ollie is fully vetted, microchipped, neutered, and recently had a dental cleaning. During the procedure, the vet noticed that his heart rate slowed significantly, and is recommending that he not be put under anesthesia again unless absolutely necessary. That means that his new home needs to be very committed to his dental health - daily tooth brushings will be necessary to combat the dachshund predisposition to dental problems! He will likely need to go to a groomer for anal glands and nail trims.
Oliver loves walks, and he has no problem going outside to do his business, but he prefers to be in the house with his people and loves to relax just as much as he likes to play. The vet said it would be good for him to lose 1-2 pounds, so regular walks and a healthy diet are important for Ollie. He does great with his dachshund foster brother, so we expect he would be good with another doggy friend in the a house, but it is not a requirement. He is crate trained, but he will also do well free roaming after he gets settled in his new home. He LOVES to sleep in the people bed. He doesn’t seem to know any commands, so a basic obedience class would be beneficial for him. And we think he would do well because he is very motivated by treats. He rides well in the car.
Ollie is a wonderful companion, and we want to make sure his new family is 100% committed to making sure that this next home is truly his forever home, because he has been moved around enough in his 4 years.
